…and a request for funding.
We are pleased to announce that the Executive Council of the School of Spiritual Science has decided to publish a new edition of the Class Lessons for the English-speaking world, and is seeking financial support in order to make the purchase cost accessible for all Class members. The edition will be in bilingual form with the original German text printed alongside the English, in order to stimulate cross-referencing and a deeper understanding of the content. This edition will be made available for purchase to all members of the First Class worldwide, with a particular focus on the growing numbers of those whose primary access to Anthroposophy is through the English language.
The intention is to publish a well-edited, high quality, ‘normal sized’ set of three volumes. These volumes will include the texts and mantras in German and English, along with the drawings and a number of additional English translations in an appendix. The current English text, translated from the German original by George Adams, will be carefully edited and possibly slightly revised, with a revised translation of the mantras worked into the existing text.
This new translation of the mantras has been developed by a group of translators, authors and Class Holders, who have volunteered their time freely and willingly to the project. These translations have been based on an intensive study of different translations, including those of George Adams, Michael Wilson, Ernst Katz, Crispian Villeneuve and Edinburgh. Our hope, provided there is adequate funding, is to launch this edition as early as the end of 2018 and no later than the English Class Conference in London in August 2019. We currently estimate the financial need to be CHF 60,000. We intend to offer the possibility to pre-purchase or pre-order the new edition to offset some of the printing costs.
This large scale project, requiring lots of resources of time, skill and money, has been met with much gratitude and enthusiasm. Many people have offered their assistance and are working on the editing, scanning and layout processes. But this still leaves the hard costs of production and printing to be financed. With this letter we wish to appeal for financial support to all members, colleagues and friends who wish to assist in making such an edition available to all interested members worldwide.
The best and most sustainable approach is to ask for gift donations in advance of the publication so that we can set a reasonable price.’
We have listed below the best way to make a tax deductible donation in your home country.
We look forward to hearing from you with ideas for how to generate the needed funding or simply direct gifts for this important project.
With warm greetings and in gratitude for your interest and support,
JOAN SLEIGH, for the Executive Council at the Goetheanum
